Charles Burns

We went to an exibition about Charles Burns. It wasn't really my thing but still fun to see. The exibition still will run until the 11th of march In Leuven in the M-Museum.

To start i will show you a selfportrait of Charles Burnes. You can already see with this portrait that he is fascinated by Horror, strangment en mutations. It is the theme of his work.

His inspirations was seen in the exibition. It was a moodwall full of comics, illustrations and graphic novels. It was the most beautifull thing in the whole exibition. Even TinTin was in it.

And TinTin is one of Charles biggest inspirations and stayed that way in his whole carreer.
"When i was very small and couldn't read yet, I looked at TinTin. Those beautifull colours, those clear structuren in the story and the clear style of drawing fascinated me as a child."
In the next example you can see the insparation of TinTin clearly.

Projects that you can also see in the exibition are portraits of famous people. In the example you can see Marilyn Manson and Madonna. He also illustrated the cover of an Iggy Pop album.

His biggest project that he worked on for so far is the black hole. He worked on it for 11 years. It is a graphic novel who is about teenagers comtaminated with a sexuale diseas. But when they have it they get distortions. Eventually this graphic novel is about being a teenager and how to handel all of the changes.

But Charles Burns doesn't only do graphic novels. He also makes illustrations for, the Time, New Yorker and the New York Times. Those aren't small names. And that in the knowledge that he had it hard as a starting illustrator to breakthrough.

Hier herken je Monica Lewenski.
You can recocgnize Monica Lewenski here.

He also worked in the theater. He made the drawings and decor for "the hart nut" a version of the nutcrakcer by Mark Morris.
In 2007 Charles drew a animation. "The horror fear(s) of the dark."
I wasn't that impressed by this animation myself. The movement in the figures was digital and wasn't good for the manuel and clean line Burns uses in his work.

And to close, here are soms more pictures from the exibition.

Een letterlijke en leuke striptease.
A nice striptease.

And an illustration that caught my attention because of his cuteness instead of horror.

It was also fun to see his sketches. Because of his lines are so chaotic and yet he can make 1 clean line out of it in the finished work.

And what also was special, was his use of the squares or lines, or not paying attention to the graphic novel model.

So i had my jury in school. All the work is done and finished. Just in time. I am pretty pleased about the comments that i had from the teachers. Now i just have to wait for the grades. the two things i havn't shown you yet are the map and the tickets for my amusmentpark. So here they are, let me know what you think!!
